Abuja-based act, Mazi Codex is one of the reasons for the above headline. The Drill rapper released his debut studio project in form of an EP, titled ‘Drill Set‘ EP.

Drill Music has been up and about for about a decade, but it wasn’t brought into the full limelight of the mainstream world until 2019. This is huge thanks to acts such as Pop Smoke, Fivio Foreign, Headie One, Dutchavelli and a couple others majorly from Chicago and the UK.
Africa is the home of adaptation. She evolves and hops on the wave of amazing music, whatever style it might be. Drill music was experimented in parts of Africa including Kumasi in Ghana– often regarded to as Kumerica– South Africa, Congo, Mozambique and now Nigeria.
Motivated by the beauty of life and inspired by Birmingham-born Drill rapper, Dutchavelli– Mazi Codex is here to take the African Drill music scene to the next level.
Drill Set is an enclaved result of when Drill music meets Nigerian rap and it is a beauty.
The distinct production style of Drill has forced quite a couple rappers to shy away from the Genre but Mazi Codex embraces it both hands on Amen featuring K3andz. It goes super hard as Mazi freestyles his twisted bars on the hard bass. Who is the Drill God in these parts? Mazi Codex is positive he holds that honour as he proves it on track 2.
Blow Mans like Eruptions, I’m going raw fuck the condoms, Wild boy still I’m focused
Mazi spits bars on “Drill God”
Don’t Leave Me is the song to jam to while on a cruise road trip. Its chorus poses a high-potential replay value. He teams up with fellow drill acts Odumodublvck and Reeplay.

Mazi credits himself, Ucee and Cross for the general production on this tape and it is important to commend the impeccable production this tape offers. OTK offers a part-moody part-melodic rendition of drill and this speaks to Mazi’s ambidexterity. He features Eeskay on this one and he does well on his part. The tape closes with it’s lead single, Ha Ah. Last but definitely not the least, in fact, probably the best song off the tape. Mazi is with a whole different energy here and you could just feel it through the earphones as he offers a world class hook.
When the Afro-Drill sub-genre finally comes into full prominence in Nigeria, ‘Drill Set‘ EP would be pointed to as one of the tapes that made it happen on the long run. Mazi dropped a good body of work with wonderful production, decent replay value and a perfectly laid drill theme.
Speaking with the act himself, he promised there’s more where Drill Set came from and enough music showcasing his versatility dropping all year. Mazi is about to have his best year yet and we are here for it.
